Sexual violence, in all forms, causes trauma and impacts the lives of survivors, their families and communities. When abuse occurs at the hands of those in positions of power and privilege, the harm is compounded. When leaders know about this harm and fail to take appropriate action, the layers of trauma deepen.
Perpetrators of sexual violence in religious settings may use conviction, faith and authority to groom youth and exploit their trust. This tactic often creates confusion and feelings of guilt or doubt for those who have been harmed. But sexual violence is never the fault of the victim.
Allegations of significant violence have recently been raised in our community. We understand that Allen County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating these allegations. We want you to know that if interactions with faith leaders made you feel uncomfortable or confused, know that it is ok to talk about it. If you were harmed, are questioning something you experienced, or need support we’re here to help. Know that there are resources available. You are not alone.
